The main volume of the fruit are in, VI and VII region, few plantations in Metropolitan and IV region The exported volume reached 22.8 million boxes during season 2011-2012. The exact volume is difficult to determine, as in the statistics 3,2 kg., 5 kg. and 10 kg. boxes all appear as “boxes exported”. Kiwifruit is very sensitive to ethylene so it must be shipped and stored separated from climacteric fruits (only non-climacteric fruits from Chile are Grapes, Cherries and asparagus). During the last few years there has been a renewed interest to add new plantations due to good returns for this product. A few selected growers are now planting the Golden Kiwi for Zespri.
